#21 Emporia State Lady Hornet Game Notes At #23 Central Missouri

The #21 Lady Hornets take on the #23 Jennies in a key early season match-up, with the loser falling to 0-2 in the MIAA.

Jory Collins is 46-20 in his third year as the head coach of the Lady Hornets and has guided them to the MIAA Tournament Championship Game in each of his first two seasons. He is 6-3 in the month of March. He has six wins against Top 25 teams. This is his 12th season on the Lady Hornet coaching staff and ESU has advanced to the NCAA tournament in ten of those seasons. He is 4-1 against Central Missouri.
Dave Slifer is 150-92 in his ninth year at UCM and 533-191 in his 23rd season overall. He is 17-34 all-time against ESU, 7-15 at UCM and 10-19 while at Missouri Western.

Emporia State is 3-2 on the year and ranked #21 in the latest USA Today Sports/WBCA National Poll. Three different Lady Hornets have recorded 20 point games in the first five contests. Three different Lady Hornets have recorded at least 11 rebounds in a game. Laura Patrick is averaging 15.6 points and Desiree Wylie averages 8.0 boards per game.

The #21 Emporia State Lady Hornets were held to just .306 shooting from the field and were outrebounded by four in a 63-51 loss at Northeastern State on Wednesday night. Laura Patrick led the Lady Hornets with 15 points and was joined in double figures by Rachel Hanf with 12 points.

Central Missouri is 5-1, 0-1 in the MIAA after falling to FHSU. BreAnna Lewis is the leading scorer for the Jennies at 17.0 points per game while Nicole Caddell averages a double-double at 11.3 points and 10.7 rebounds per game.

The Lady Hornets lead the all-time series 36-30. Emporia State has won eight of the last 11 games in the Multipurpose Building. The two have met nine times in the post season with ESU holding a 5-2 lead in the MIAA Tournament and a 4-0 lead in NCAA Tournament play. They have met five times with both teams ranked and the Lady Hornets have won all five.

The #22 Lady Hornets overcame a 15 point first half deficit but were denied on a last second attempt for the win in a 63-62 loss at Central Missouri. Emporia State trailed 28-13 with 4:12 left in the half and the Jennies led 40-34 with 13:29 left when ESU went on an 8-2 run to tie the game at 42 with 11:14 left. There were seven ties and four lead changes over the final ten minutes. UCM's Renae Shippy missed two free throws with 9.1 left. Jocelyn Cummings then drove the lane and dished to Kelsey Balcom, whose shot missed as time expired. Balcom led ESU with 19 points and nine boards. She was joined in double figures by Merissa Quick with 12 points and Heather Robben with 11 points.

After finals, the Lady Hornets will travel to Canyon, Texas for the Lady Buff Christmas Classic. Emporia State will play West Texas A&M and Abilene Christian on Dec. 17-18.
