Though the heavy snows have not started yet, help will be ready when it happens.
The City of Topeka has teamed up with the Jayhawk Area Agency on Aging and the Topeka Independent Living Resource Center to provide the second annual Snow Relief Team.
The teams, made up of five or six crews of women inmates from the Topeka Correctional Facility and two male inmate crews from Shawnee County Department of Corrections, will remove snow on driveways and sidewalks adjacent to properties of those that qualify.
To qualify there must be at least an inch of snow to begin with, and the person must:
-- Have an income of no more that $33,800 per houshold for one person, or $38650 per household for a two person household
-- Be 55 years or older
-- Have a disbility
-- Have no other local family member that can help.
The City reserves the right to decline service if weather is hazardous for the safety of City personnel and/or equipment.
To see if you qualify for the program, call the Jayhawk Area Agency on Aging at 235-1397 OR the Topeka Independent Living Resource Center at 233-4572
