Topeka (WIBW) - It's arguably the most hotly-contested race of this primary election. The GOP Senate race between Congressmen Jerry Moran and Todd Tiahrt is bringing shots from both sides.
The television ads from the campaign have many people wondering who is telling the truth. The Congressional record, which both camps cite to support their claims, provides an answer that may not be the most helpful - it would appear both are.
For example, Tiahrt's claim that Moran voted against the Bush tax cuts cites a budget resolution that included the Bush tax cuts, but also set parameters for increased spending. Moran says there is a major difference, and he consistently voted for measures on the Bush tax cuts themselves. Tiahrt says the resolution was important because it set up negotiations on the final measure and led to a smaller final package of cuts.
On saying Moran supports amnesty, Tiahrt cites various budget votes, including Moran's vote against an amendment to a Homeland Security funding bill, which would have taken money from so-called sanctuary cities. Also, Moran voted for a bill expanding children's health insurance which Tiahrt says allowed illegal immigrants to get taxpayer funded health care. As a result, Tiahrt says, states like Kansas had to pass a law requiring verification of citizenship. However, the procedure of state's passing such laws is laid out in the bill.
Moran questions Tiahrt's illegal immigration credentials, too, saying Tiahrt has supported proposals for lower tuition for illegal immigrants. Tiahrt admits he did so in the past, but has since changed his mind, calling his prior view a mistake.
Moran also has an ad saying Tiahrt voted to hide earmark spending from public view. Moran cites a vote on a budget bill that contained earmark disclosure rules. However, Tiahrt says it also contained rules making it more difficult to approve tax cuts. Both have signed on to various earmark reform measures over the years.

What is becoming more obvious is that they are both professional 'politicians', and part of the problem in DC. Is this the only choices that our two party system is going to give us?
