Topeka (WIBW) - Rain didn't seem to dampen the enthusiasm for this year's Spirit of Kansas.
Shawnee County Parks and Rec officials said Monday an estimated 16,500 people took part in the 14th annual event at Lake Shawnee.
Rain did cancel a planned country concert, but other activities went on as scheduled. Recreation Director Randy Luebbe says some 700 people attended the car show, craft and blues festival; nearly 300 people took part in the golf tournament; 50 people viewed the boat and ski show; and, with a break in the rain, 7500 people came to Lake Shawnee to view the fireworks display, with 8000 more watching from the surrounding neighborhoods.
Authorities alse deemed their traffic plan a success. Luebbe says about 200 people rode shuttle busses from White Lakes Plaza and it took about 30 minutes to get all the vehicles at the lake back on the road.

Joey-do you ever have anything positive to say? I get sick of reading your negative comments. I would guess that most citizens enjoyed their tax dollars going to some descent entertainment. I am glad they left the show in the budget. As far as a different location, you have to remember about the fall-out which I believe is one of the reasons it was moved from Washburn! As a resident of Southeast Topeka, I am very glad they continue to have the show at the lake!
16,000 people is considered a success..??? If you add up all the tax payer costs involved in this show, including the 60, yes, 60 sheriffs deputies and the TPD officers holiday pay..double time and a half, how much per person in attendance did it cost us????? Truely not worth it. Maybe they could hold it in an area better suited to the traffic needs and easier for pedestrians to get to. This was a waste!
booo hooooo booo OH WELL!! IT WAS A GREAT SHOW!!!!!!!!!! IF you had any skills at planning then you might have thought hmmmmm...prob not a good idea to try and get through the traffic at the lake around 10: 30 or 11...hmmmmmm that would be a smart idea!! NOW EVERYBODY COME OUT TO HEARTLAND PARK NEXT SATURDAY NIGHT FOR SOME AWESOME DIRT TRACK RACING!!!
