(WIBW) - A certified international elections observer wants to oversee voting in Kansas.
Republican J.R. Claeys filed for Secretary of State Wednesday, completing the paperwork at the county clerk's office in Salina, then presenting it in Topeka.
Claeys has volunteered to observe elections in places like El Salvador and Nicaragua.
"I've seen the impact of these policies on the ground," Claeys saud. "I've verified vote counts for accuracy, implemented voter identification programs and advised elections commissions on ways to improve voter security and access."
Claeys also has advocated for small businesses as the CEO of a national business trade association and working with the Small Business Administration.
"Working for business advocacy groups and the SBA I've had the privilege of fighting for paperwork reduction, regulatory reform and tax relief for small businesses across America," Claeys said. "Kansans want a secretary of state who understands the needs of small business and will keep the office efficient and out of their way as we work to turn this economy around."
Claeys will face Kris Kobach and Elizabeth Ensley in the August primary. The incumbent secretary of state is Democrat Chris Biggs, who
faces a primary challenge from state Sen. Chris Steineger of Kansas
City.
