Sen. Pat Roberts, R-Kansas, will receive an award from the Federal Home Loan Bank of Topeka on Wednesday, June 2.
In celebration of the 20th anniversary of the Federal Home Loan System’s Affordable Housing Program, FHLBank Topeka will present Roberts the Chester A. Sterling Friend of Housing award for his support of housing.
The event will be held at a Sheltered Living residence and will highlight a successful partnership with CoreFirst Bank & Trust, an FHLBank member. Sheltered Living received $350,000 in AHP grants, which were used to rehabilitate nine homes and one four-plex, home to 63 disabled individuals.
The Friend of Housing award is named after Chester A. Sterling, the Bank’s first president. Under his leadership, FHLBank Topeka started with a few million dollars in capital and grew to assets of $96.6 million and 235 member banks at his retirement. Senator Roberts has supported housing initiatives by supporting legislation that created the FHLBanks’ AHP (Gramm-Leach-Bliley). As a member of the Senate Finance Committee, Roberts worked to expand the use of the Low-income Housing Tax Credit and as a member of the Senate Agriculture Committee, he has been a strong supporter of USDA Rural Development and its programs supporting affordable housing.
FHLBank Topeka, a privately owned, federally chartered corporation, promotes housing and homeownership by providing wholesale products and services that help member financial institutions expand the availability of mortgage credit, compete more effectively in their markets and foster strong and vibrant communities. With approximately $42.6 billion in assets and $1.9 billion in capital, FHLBank serves nearly 875 banks, thrifts, credit unions and insurance companies throughout Colorado, Kansas, Nebraska and Oklahoma.
