Topeka (WIBW) - School vending machines are about to get a makeover.

The State Board of Education voted 7-3 Wednesday to remove foods deemed to be of little nutritional value.

Most Kansas schools already follow some guidelines. By the fall of 2010, they'll have to implement some changes, and, by fall 2011, all candy and junk food will be out. Also, drinks are limited to water, 100-percent juice, low-sugar sports drinks and low-fat or skim milk.

Jodi Mackey, head of Child Nutrition and Wellness for the Kansas Dept. of Education, says officials need to demonstrate to students and parents that school is a healthy environment and help them make healthy choices.

Those voting against the proposal felt it wouldn't make an impact on childhood obesity and encouraged more physical activity in schools.
