BLACKSBURG, Va., (WIBW)_ Members of Topeka-based Westboro Baptist Church turned up at the Upper Big Branch mine in West Virginia on Friday morning.
They were there for a protest following the mine disaster which claimed the lives of at least 25 miners. Rescue teams continue to search for four more miners whose fate is still unknown.
The church claims the explosion was a result of a threatening memo that the church said was sent from West Virginia, the New York Times reported.
According to the Charleston Gazette, more than 300 counter-protesters were on hand for a counter demonstration against the six church members who showed up.
Nearby, larger numbers of church members fanned out across three locations in Blacksburg, Virginia nearly two years after the shootings at Virginia Tech that killed 32 people.
They too were met by counter protesters, including the father of Morgan Harrington, a Virginia Tech student who disappeared last October. Harrington said he couldn't believe the Westboro Church was including Morgan's memory in their protests.

in addition to my past comments... I am afraid on both sides of the debate. All parts of the debate, we have seen significant signs of violence from the right over the past few months. Yelling about socialism that really isn't socialism. I hope not to see it against these people as vile as they are. I just hope that they learn, and that the Military father wins in the appeal to bankrupt this bunch. This would be the best for them to show them that this type of speech causes and breeds violence. We are not allowed to yell fire in a building, as I think these and many others have been doing.
I hate to tell people that this is not what certain religous groups actually teach that they are wrong. I was raised Baptist in Indiana. This is what they teach there. That these people are the reason for all our problems. I watched friends commit suicide because they were gay and not wanting to admit it. I have learned from this and basically became a Deist. I have studied many religons and all have been twisted to hate one way or another thinking they are superior. I for one want to take a page from Jefferson's book. There are things that need to be learned. I have recently been told I am one of the best men someone knew. I was honored by this since it was by a christian who watched me take care of my brother who was having a violent diabetic attack and punched me in the face 3 times. I say this because I am tired of comments about atheist, agnostics, and deists being immoral. Part of me wants to rip these people apart, but I learned a long time ago violence proves nothing
If these idiots keep doing this crap then one day they are going to run into a group of people who just doesn't care and will kill these a**holes which would be a really good thing.
