Officials released a study today detailing options that could restore rail service to Topeka and six other cities in Kansas.
The study outlined four potential plans to give Kansans new travel options.
The first two plans are night time services that would extend the routes of Fort Worth Amtraks to Newton or Kansas City.
The other two are day time services that would extend the Oklahoma City and Fort Worth train routes to KC.
Infrastructure improvements to make those routes possible could cost anywhere from $154 to $476 million, and all four plans would require Kansas to pay operating expenses of up to $8 million per year.
Other potential stops in Kansas include Topeka, Lawrence, Wichita, Emporia, Strong City and Arkansas City.
The cost estimates of renovating, building stations and boarding platforms weren't included in the study. Officials say those would be local costs.
They say a passenger rail service would provide more jobs and safer, greener ways to travel.
Implementing this will take a while.
First, officials say they want to use some sort of public process to select one alternative.

This sounds like a great idea to me. Railways have improved the quality of life and travel for many other communities. Let's face it, if you want improvements there is a tax cost, but I think jobs and green technology are well worth it.
This is wrong can someone please tell me why the surrounding area to Wichita should have the option of the rail way. To me it would make more sense to have the railway in southwest kansas. We are four hours away from anywhere. In Wichita area they are only 2.5 hours away from KC and Okla City compare to us in southwest, we are almost eight hours away from both KC and Okla City.
What is the pay back on it? or is it another tax burden on the people?
