The Salvation Army in Kansas and international hunger relief organization Numana, Inc. are partnering to provide one million meals to Haiti earthquake victims.

Hundreds of volunteers will work through the weekend in El Dorado, Kansas to prepare and package the ready to eat meals.

Crews began the task Friday. The meals consist of rice, soy protein, freeze-dried vegetables and vitamins and can be cooked in boiling water.

Once boxed, the meals will weigh more than 150,000. An additional 285,000 meals, also prepared by Numana Inc., are currently awaiting shipment from Des Moines.

The Salvation Army is coordinating with other agencies to get these supplies where they are needed.

The Salvation Army currently has an assessment team en route to Port-au-Prince. Once there, the team will liaison with Salvation Army personnel already on site in Haiti, where the Army has had a presence since 1950.

Monetary donations are the most critical need as supplies and personnel are mobilized. Donors can text the word “HAITI” to 52000 to automatically give $10 to The Salvation Army’s relief efforts.
