(WIBW) - A Mexican citizen was indicted Tuesday on charges of transporting illegal aliens, including a 2-year-old girl who had been separated from her mother.

29-year old Santos Tomas Ochoa-Bello is charged with one count of unlawful transportation of illegal aliens and one count of unlawful re-entry into the United States after being deported.

According the indictment, the Kansas Highway patrol stopped Ochoa-Bello Nov. 24 on Highway 156 in Barton County.

He was driving a Dodge Caravan minivan carrying a dozen passengers, who, according to the indictment, were citizens of Mexico or Guatemala in the United States illegal.

Prosecutors say six of the passengers were juveniles traveling without parents or legal guardians. The youngest was a 2-year-old girl who had been separated from her mother at some point while the passengers crossed from Mexico into the United States. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents observed that the girl seemed hungry and had been given only Gatorade during the trip. Her clothes were soiled and she had no change of clothing or diapers.

Investigators say the passengers had made their way from Mexico to a house in Phoenix, Ariz. From there, they arranged for transportation to destinations in Pennsylvania and New Jersey, where they hoped to join relatives and find employment. Ochoa-Bello had agreed to drive the minivan from Phoenix to Pennsylvania, where he was to turn the van over to another person.

Ochoa-Bello faces a maximum penalty of 5 years in federal prison without parole and a fine up to $250,000 if convicted on the transportation charge, and a maximum penalty of 2 years and a fine up to $250,000 on the charge of unlawful re-entry after deportation.

The Kansas Highway Patrol and Immigration and Customs Enforcement investigated. Assistant U.S. Attorney Brent Anderson is prosecuting.

i have a big problem and number of questions of why the concerns over the condition of this 2 year old girl. when u.s immigration was doing these raids starting 2 years ago. they were raiding homes while kids were in school. taking there parents and aresting them and when the kids come home from school there parents are't there. so whats ok about that nobody crying about that but the kids and parents. there are thousands of kids here without there parents now. if the dad or mom is a american there here while there husbend or wife are going back to mexico. but it makes it a better story to tell how you found this little girl with dirty diaper. think about those familys you torn apart without a care of anything. oh just doing your job ya right you get off doing this crap without a care for those kids and familys. and playing with those at the border trying to come here legal with no chance in hell of that. with your money game with them. keep coming back and pay more money.
