LEAVENWORTH CO., Kan. (WIBW) – The Kansas Turnpike Authority’s first unmanned toll plaza is almost ready to open.
It’s located at the Tonganoxie/Eudora interchange in Leavenworth County.
Just as drivers already take their tickets from a machine, they will now also pay their toll through a machine.
Cash, coins and credit cards will all be accepted.
KTA’s Chief Information Officer, Marty Wiltse, said that if a driver’s cash or credit card isn’t recognized, a non-pay toll slip will be issued to them, that they can pay-off and take care of a different toll plaza.
With no humans staffing this stop, the toll plaza will be monitored by KTA dispatch officials in Wichita, through video surveillance.
Wiltse said that this un-staffed toll plaza might actually take longer for drivers to get through, especially in its initial stages as drivers get accustomed to using the machines.
Barbara Friedman, the Tonganoxie/Eudora interchange’s designing engineer and the Senior Project Manager from HNTB, said they took the extra wait time into account when drawing up and designing this toll plaza.
Wiltse said the KTA plans to install more of the un-manned automatic systems at 13 toll plazas.
The KTA still doesn't have an official open date for the Tonganoxie/Eudora toll plaza, but plans to have it open to traffic in late December or early January.
