Topeka (WIBW) - A Topeka's company's "every day heroes" came up big for the United Way of Greater Topeka.

Blue Cross Blue Shield of Kansas President Andy Corbin presented United Way CEO Miriam Krehbiel and campaign chair Jim Ogle, WIBW General Manager, a check for $219,197.84 Monday.

Of that amount, $184,197.84 came from BCBS employees, while the other $35,000 came from the company's foundation.

In this time of increased need, Corbin noted the percentage of employees giving also increased this year.

Krehbiel says the United Way is seeing many more people come in for assistance with basic needs, such as utilities, which makes it all the more important that the BCBS workers were able to give this year.

The BCBS Foundation and employees also donated to United Way campaigns in Salina, Wichita and Hutchinson. All the dollars combined totalled around $241,000.
