HOLTON, Kan. (WIBW) -- Just north of Topeka, Holton's Latino Community Center hosted its first Information and Resources Fair.

Fair organizer Kelly White said Saturday's gathering of education, health, immigration and financial resources into one place, is a step in the right direction for Holton's growing Latino community.

"We're trying to help them feel more comfortable in the community," he said.

Many of the pamphlets and information presented were in English and Spanish.

"A lot of them don't speak much English yet," said White.

Which is why the bilingual services were even more important, agreed Dr. Carlos Chavez, who helped out at the fair.

"They feel more confidence when somebody can speak the same language," Dr. Chavez said.

Upstairs at the fair, attendees could be screened for diabetes and hypertension.

Cheryl Yingst, a nurse at Holton Community Hospital and a Diabetes Educator, said being at this fair was very important.

"Diabetes and hyper-tension are unfortunately very prevalent in the Latino, Hispanic community," she said.

So by being there she hoped to open a new door of health care access and information to the Latino community.

"One to get screened, and two to know where to go to find out more information about the diseases."

White said with the Latino and Hispanic population in North East Kansas expanding, its important for them to have access to resources and services to help their families.
