(TOPEKA, KS) In a time when people need it, the library is opening a Jobs & Careers Neighborhood. A combined gift of $10,000 from the Capitol Federal Foundation and James Van Sickle, of Topeka, led to the purchase of more materials for our jobs and career collection and creation of a Jobs & Careers Neighborhood. This customer-friendly display technique allows one-stop browsing of related materials.
A recognition and ribbon cutting ceremony is scheduled for 9:30 am Nov. 18 in the Jobs & Careers Neighborhood. The Jobs and Careers Neighborhood is located across the aisle from another popular neighborhood, the Health Information Neighborhood.
Lisa Stubbs, Chair of The Library Foundation, noted that private donors play important roles as the library reconfigures its space in imaginative ways. “By reinforcing our ability to acquire new materials, these donors definitely elevate our game,” she said.
What can you expect to find in the Jobs and Career Neighborhood? Job kit bags filled with books, magazines and local information, two computers dedicated to job-related activity and books and DVDs on topics ranging from how to write a resume and cover letter to good careers for English majors.
Librarians Terry Miller and Angie Foltz work closely with the Jobs & Careers Neighborhood and the customers who use it. If you need additional assistance, you can make an appointment with them to work on specific projects.
Technical Services Supervisor Thad Hartman said the creation of this neighborhood should boost circulation of these materials 30 to 50 percent. “Jobs and career information is in high demand, so this neighborhood will make it really easy for people to come in and find the information they need,” he said. “We’ve always had these materials, but by putting this in a neighborhood, it improves access for our customers.”
