EMPORIA, Kan. (WIBW)_ The place where Veterans Day began honored America's troops Wednesday. A parade through the streets of the city followed Veterans breakfast and highlighted the morning,s events.

A memorial service late in the morning honored the nation's fallen soldiers. After which the American Legion Post 5 and VFW Post 1980 sponsored a Ham and bean feed.

The city was also expected to unveil signs proclaiming Emporia as the founding city of Veterans Day, according to KVOE. Jesse Solis, who led the effort to purchase the signs told the radio station that the City Manager Matt Zimmerman and Mayor Jeff Longbine will dedicate the signs during the day's service.

The 3' x 6' signs are expected to adorn each entrance of the city.

Emporia is recognized as the founding city of Veterans Day, with Emporian Al King coming up with the idea in 1953. Kansan and President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed a bill for the holiday on May 26, 1954 and in 1971, President Richard Nixon made Veterans Day a Federal holiday.
