MANHATTAN – Two Kansas State University faculty members were each presented $5,000 awards in recognition of their outstanding research and teaching during a ceremony Nov. 9 at the K-State Alumni Center. The annual Dr. Ron and Rae Iman Outstanding Faculty Awards are sponsored by the K-State Alumni Association and made possible through a gift from Dr. Ron and Rae Iman.

The recipient of the 2009-2010 Iman Outstanding Faculty Award for Research is Dr. Daniel Marcus, university distinguished professor of veterinary medicine. This award recognizes a full-time K-State faculty member who has distinguished his or herself in their chosen profession and who has contributed significantly through research to improve the betterment of the educational experience, or whose research has had a significant impact on their area of study.

Dr. Marcus joined the K-State faculty in 1998. He is an expert in cellular biophysics of the inner ear and has applied his knowledge of electronic circuits and equipment to his investigations. The aspects of inner ear function he studies are critical for normal hearing and balance. His research has been funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) for nearly three decades, and the results of his work, and that of his collaborators, have resulted in more than 70 peer-reviewed publications, book chapters and reports to national and international meetings.

Dr. Marcus earned his bachelor’s degree from Antioch College in Ohio and his master’s degree and doctorate from Washington University in St. Louis.

The recipient of the 2009-2010 Iman Outstanding Faculty Award for Teaching is Dr. Derek A. Mosier, a professor of veterinary medicine. This award honors a full-time K-State faculty member for excellence in high quality instruction, strong relationships with students inside and outside of the classroom and reputation for scholarship and distinguished service to the university.

During 1986-90, Dr. Mosier served on the faculty in the Department of Pathology at Oklahoma State University and joined the K-State Department of Diagnostic Medicine/Pathobiology at K-State in 1990. His teaching involves general and systemic pathology instruction for veterinary medical students. Dr. Mosier’s teaching efforts have been acknowledged by several awards, including the Norden (Pfizer) Distinguished Teaching Award, the Student American Veterinary Medical Association Award for Teaching Excellence in the Basic Sciences and the Bayer Animal Health Teaching Excellence Award. He conducts research on infectious diseases of cattle, particularly bovine respiratory disease.

Dr. Mosier, born and raised in Manhattan, Kan., earned a bachelor’s degree in 1976 and a doctor of veterinary medicine degree in 1978, both from K-State.

The Imans reside in Albuquerque, N.M. Ron earned three degrees from K-State, a bachelor’s degree in math education in 1962 and a master’s degree in 1970 and a doctorate in statistics in 1973. He has been a life member of the K-State Alumni Association since 1963. He is a past member of the Association’s Board of Directors, a KSU Foundation trustee and a member of the Arts and Sciences Advisory Council. He received the university’s Arts and Sciences Distinguished Service Award in 1996.
