(WIBW) - One of the Army medics who helped victims of last week's shootings at Fort Hood is from the Topeka area.

Specialist Francisco De la Serna is a 2005 graduate of Saint Mary's Academy.

His father, Luis, told 13 News Monday that his son was assigned to the Readiness Center last week, and was outside the building when he heard the shooting break out.

Spc. De la Serna described the scene to CNN's Campbell Brown in a live interview Friday as "chaos." He says people took cover behind anything they could and no one really knew what was going on.

Among the victims Spc. De la Serna treated was the policewoman who shot the suspect, stopping the rampage.

Luis De la Serna says he tried calling his son as soon as he heard about the shooting, only to get voicemail. Another son eventually got through and learned everything was all right.

Luis De la Serna says he had spoken with his son over the weekend. He says his son was still digesting all that had happened and just seems reallly tired right now.
