Topeka (WIBW) - Church attire will include the garb of ghosts and ghouls at one Topeka church Friday.

Topeka's Grace Episcopal Cathedral, 701 SW 8th Ave., is encouraging people to come dressed in costumes for their silent film festival.

The free event will be held at 7 pm Friday, Oct. 30, at the church. It's meant to help families and individuals kick off their Halloween celebrations.

Two short films, Do Detectives Think?, starring Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy, and The First 100 Years, starring Harry Landon, will be shown, followed by a brief intermission. The Man Who Laughs, starring Conrad Veidt, will be the feature film shown after the break. It tells the story of a nobleman’s son who is kidnapped by a political enemy and then mutilated by a “gypsy” surgeon.

Renowned theater organist Marvin Faulwell will return for his 12th year to accompany the films on the cathedral’s organ. Faulwell plays in the style of early silent film organists, contributing to the evening’s paranormal atmosphere. The cathedral’s Gothic architecture and vaulted ceilings help, too.

Film buff and historian Denise Morrison will provide interesting behind-the-scenes trivia and gossip about the stars in each film.

This event is appropriate for all ages. Popcorn and bottled water will be sold as a fundraiser for the Cathedral Youth Group.

Silents in the Cathedral is funded by the National Endowment for the Humanities. It is a partnership program between the Topeka and Shawnee County Public Library and Grace Episcopal Cathedral.
