LOUISBURG, Kansas - A routine traffic stop turned deadly for one man in Miami County over the weekend. The accident happened just before 10 a.m. Sunday.

According to the Kansas Highway Patrol, Brandon Mechaley, 18, of Custer, South Dakota, was caught by a trooper speeding on U-69 Highway. When the trooper attempted to pull Mechaley over, the crash log reports that Mechaley exited to K-68 westbound.

The KHP says Mechaley tried to avoid vehicles that were stopped to turn into the Cider Mill and lost control of the 1997 Pontiac Firebird he was driving. The vehicle rolled and came to rest on its roof.

Mechaley was wearing his seatbelt, according to Highway Patrol.

Brandon was staying with my family in Louisburg for a few days before this happened. We met him in South Dakota 3 years ago and he was nice. The day of the accident, we woke up to a note on the counter saying "Went for drive, need to think some things through. Be back later." We didn't know what happened but he never came back. I don't why he was trying to outrun the cops but $30 was all the money he had, so he wouldn't have enough money for a ticket. That could've had something to do with it. I didn't know him very well, like my siblings did, because i'm younger, but the three days he was with us, he was awesome. He went through tough things, but he was always smiling. I can't believe he's gone. R.I.P. Brandon.

Brandon you were like a brother to me and I miss you so much. I hate myself for not talking to you or Brittany or Bradley or Brady as much as I could have. I just cant believe this is real. The last time I talked to you, you were pretending to be Brittany on her msn, you were funny, you were sweet, you were...alive. R.I.P. Brandon James Mechaley<3

I was fortunate enough to call Brandon my grandson. He would be grateful to know that he did not hurt anyone else. Brandon was a national guardesman in SD and so proud to serve his country. Please do not form your opinion by what a few people have said. Brandon chose to miss those cars which no matter the circumstance makes him a hero. Brandon did not look at the negative in life but only the "positive side" Brandon comes from a law enforcement family. The KHP officer was doing his job to the best of his abilities please leave him alone. Those of you with your angry hurtful comments I pray you never have someone in your life who makes a mistake. To the wonderful, caring people of Kansas who helped our prayed for my Brandon you will never be forgotten.
