Topeka, Kan. (WIBW) - UPDATE:

The Marion County Sheriff's Department says Tara Simhiser, who has been missing since Tuesday, has been found and is unharmed.

Simhiser was found in Hiawatha, Kansas. Investigators said someone recognized her in a bank and called police.

Hiawatha Police Chief Evans Woehlecke says the
girl seemed scared when officers arrived at the bank.

The chief says the suspect, 21-year-old Rojelio Hernandez, was
detained about 15 minutes later as he was cruising around town in a
Honda Accord.

Marion County authorities are on their way to Hiawatha to interview Simhiser and to bring her home.

Earlier Story:

The AMBER Alert has transitioned to a deactivated status in the search for a missing Kansas teen as the search for Tara Simhiser continues.

Authorities released a possible license tag number Wednesday night. It is 050BDD, possibly on a late 1990s model blue Honda Accord theat Tara may be traveling in.

Authorities say the man captured on surveillance video wandering around northeast Kansas high schools may have abducted 17-year old Tara Renee Simhiser from Marion County.

An Amber Alert was issued for her just before 6pm Wednesday.

The Marion County Sheriff's Office says Simhiser was last seen around 3pm Tuesday in Marion County. She's believed to be with 21-year old Rojelio Hernandez.

The pair might have been spotted in Wichita Wednesday night.

The Sheriff's Office says they at first believed Simhiser went willingly, but information in their investigation led them to discover that may not have been the case. They said they learned of some "physical contact" that led them to issue the Amber Alert Wednesday, signaling she may be in danger. They would not elaborate on just what the contact was.

The Sheriff's Office says surveillance video from a Topeka business indicates they may have been in the Capital City Tuesday night. They also say a text message to her mother from a stranger's phone was traced to Topeka.

Late Wednesday, however, the KBI said new tips led them to believe the pair was spotted in the Wichita area Wednesday night.

Ksamber.org/ released this information about the alert:

"Tara Renee Simhiser has been abducted. She is a 17yo white female, 5ft tall, 120lbs, bln hair, bro eyes. Last seen at her residence in marion county. suspect is Rojelio Hernandez, hisp male, age 21, 5ft 8in, 155lbs, bro hair, bro eyes. He will possibly be driving in a blue late 90 Honda Accord. There is information that they may be in or headed to Topeka. Hotels should be checked."

KBI confirms Hernandez is the same person who has been going around several schools in Kansas, including Junction City posing as a student. Shortly after he turned up at Junction City High School, authorities said they'd identified him as a man wanted for a probation violation out of Odessa, Texas.

Authorities listed Odessa as one possible destination.

Late Wednesday, the KBI put out a notice that the case was transitioning to "deactivated" status. However, they explained an active search continues and it does not reflect any change in the investigation. They say it is simply a term referring to when the information moves from their home page to the "Past Alerts" section.

They say the search for Simhiser continues. Call 911 or the KBI at 1-800-KS-CRIME if you have any information.

This Tara Simhiser case angers me. I just saw that Marion County is still holding the young man she was with and deciding about charges. I'm sorry, his 72 hrs is up and if anything he should be charged with contributing to a minor's misconduct. Her parents should be charged with filing a false report by saying there was violence involved just to upgrade it to an Amber Alert.

The sad thing is this was a false alarm. This teenage girl went willingly with this young man. I'm not sure what kind of 'physical contact' led them to believe she was in danger, but in the end they now no that was not the case. Please don't make assumptions about rape or other abuse until the facts are in, it only misleads people of the truth.
