(WIBW) - The answers are blowing in the wind for Cloud County Community College students.
The students have been getting a hands-on education on wind turbines, thanks to a partnership with Westar Energy.
In May, Westar Energy donated one of two obsolete 750 kilowatt wind turbines from Jeffrey Energy Center. In the late 1990s, Westar became the first utility to commercially operate a wind turbine in the state of Kansas. Westar says the two Jeffrey Energy Center wind turbines aided the company in the development of the largest wind energy program of its kind in Kansas and helped rank Westar among the top 10 utilities in the nation for wind power per customer.
Cloud County Community College instructors and students will show off what they learned from the donation from 1 to 3 pm Friday at the college. They'll demonstrate turbine rescue techniques, proper bolt tightening procedures and turbine blade repair.
“Wind Energy technicians are in high demand, it is important that universities and utility companies continue to work together to maintain a strong relationship” said Greg Greenwood, Westar’s vice president of generation construction.
Cloud County Community College is the only college in Kansas approved to offer an Associate of Applied Science degree in Wind Energy Technology. The program began in 2006 with one evening class, one instructor and four students. There are currently four instructors teaching 104 students, with 168 students on a waiting list to join the program.
