Subject: Announcement
To All Department Personnel:
After careful consideration, I have decided to resign as Fire Chief effective September 4, 2009 for personal and family reasons. For almost five years, I have enjoyed working with the people in our department, City government, and the community as a whole. I wish the very best for each of you.
Reaction has been pouring in since Chief Giles' announcement Monday afternoon. City Manager Norton Bonaparte released this statement:
“Chief Giles has raised the professionalism of the department’s management during his tenure here in Topeka. I appreciate his efforts and wish him well in his future endeavors.”
“Soon I will initiate a search for a new fire chief. I will be looking for someone who has demonstrated strong leadership and technical skills, one who has a vision, and the ability to transform that vision into a strong, cohesive department."
“My plan is to do an internal search to fill the position of chief of the Topeka Fire Department. However, I do not rule out an external search for fire chief candidates to find someone who meets my expectations." said City Manager Norton Bonaparte.
The Office of the International Association of Firefighters, Local 83 released this statement:
From the Office of the International Association of Firefighters, Local 83
With the departure of Howard Giles from the Topeka Fire Department, the International Association of Firefighters, Local 83, looks forward to addressing the challenges ahead in the spirit of cooperation and partnership with the City of Topeka.

It is funny, typically everyone loves a firefigther right? Of course, you have to show up to work to do your job before everyone loves you, so now we'll promote someone from within that then promotes his buddy because he "owes him." As a government employee I am sick and tired of hearing the negative comments about Giles, sometimes you just have to DEAL WITH IT. I agree with Jason, I am a family member of a true American HERO. You do your job because you have a passion, a love for the the duty that is calling. I know several soldiers that don't like their current Commander "Mr. President" but they still do what he orders, they don't call in everyday-oh they don't have it that easy. I wish Giles and his family much happiness and if they are smart, they will leave the HELL HOLE of Topeka! Topeka residents seem to forget how they are still living in the early 1900's!

Soldiers without doubt heroes! They don't see their families for months on end and they know when they go into a war zone it might be the last moment. Sorry I don’t put firefighters in the same boat. Yes to the ones that lost their lives heroes. But just because you show up and drive the truck down the street. Sorry no badge for you. Difference is Soldiers do there job and most of the time they don’t get thanks and they quietly go home. Most firefighters on the other hand seem to think their owed something just because they are firefighters. Sorry that doesn’t fly. How many soldiers disliked their platoon SGT’s or 1SG’s maybe their Commander? Do you see them on TV whining around about it? No they suck it up and deal with it. Besides thanks to vets I can think what I want. Just because I don’t agree with you doesn’t mean anything bad. Just my opinion.

Hmmm as the wife of a soldier I consider my husbands job a little more important and dangerous that your jobs at Burger King. If you don't consider firefighters heros, I hope you don't ever stand too close to the flame broiler. These men and women that choose jobs that are dangerous in order to protect YOU, and your rights and should be considered heroes. If you don't that is your right, but remember to say an extra prayer for them as they might be at your house someday saving your life.
