TOPEKA, Kansas - The Union Pacific Railroad will permanently close two of its crossings - one at NW Howard just west of Lincoln and one at NW Grant Street just west of Tyler - beginning around 8 a.m. Tuesday, July 7.
The closures are along a Union Pacific Railroad spur that runs to the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company plant from the railroad’s mainline to the south. The closures were sought by the Union Pacific Railroad in exchange for their giving up rights to railroad right-of-way along 1st Street between the Topeka and Kansas Avenue bridges during construction of the new Topeka Boulevard Bridge.
The Council gave final approval to the closures in June 2008 per its previous agreement with the railroad.
