Topeka, KS (WIBW) - Casey Jr. and Thomas the Tank Engine look out. There is a new locomotive in town. The only operational hydrogen fuel cell switch locomotive was unveiled in Topeka Monday. Supporters hope it will open the door for a new line of environmentally friendly rail.
"This is a great day for the Railroad, for Vehicle Projects, and for the Department of the Army. This is cutting edge technology..." said Mark Stehly, Vice President of Environment and Research Development for BNSF.
Several people gathered at the BNSF System Maintenance Terminal to witness the unveiling of the new locomotive. Among those present: Congresswoman Lynn Jenkins and Senator Sam Brownback.
Senator Brownback has helped push the project since plans were announced in January, 2008.
