Topeka (WIBW) - Parts of Shawnee County are without emergency siren coverage.
Emergency management director Dave Sterbenz said Friday that he recently learned two sirens on the former Menninger campus were accidentally torn down. He says the contractors believed the sirens belonged to Menninger.
Sterbenz says those sirens cover about a half-mile radius around SW 6th and Wanamaker. The area includes the governor's mansion and Wanamaker Elementary School.
Sterbenz says it's believed those sirens haven't been operational for about two years, based on complaints received and when electricity was cut to the campus.
In addition, a siren at Logan Elementary School, 1124 NW Lyman Rd., was taken down during renovation work in early June.
Sterbenz says those sirens are included in a replacement plan that's been delayed in getting approval from commissioners because of objections in the bidding process. Sterbenz says he hopes to bring the plan before commissioners again July 6th.
