TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) _ Gov. Mark Parkinson has requested federal disaster assistance for 28 Kansas counties because of severe storm damage.

The request covers damage to public infrastructure caused by large hail, high winds, tornadoes and torrential rains from April 25 through May 16.

Counties included are Anderson, Barber, Bourbon, Butler, Chase, Cherokee, Coffey, Cowley, Crawford, Elk, Finney, Greenwood, Harper, Harvey, Kingman, Labette, Linn, Lyon, Marion, Marshall, Montgomery, Morris, Neosho, Reno, Rice, Sumner, Waubaunsee and Wilson.

Those counties and others were named in an emergency declaration made by Parkinson on May 5 and amended on May 15.

Preliminary damage assessments for all counties originally named in the declaration exceeded $13 million.
