Law enforcement officers will take off on a very special journey Wednesday.

The annual Law Enforcement Torch Run takes off from the Statehouse steps at 7 am Wednesday. Their leg is one of several, which began May 30th.

More than 650 officers from more than 60 agencies will carry the "Flame of Hope" through 28 Kansas counties. It's on its way to the Special Olympics Summer Games in Wichita. The games will be held Friday through Sunday at Wichita State University. Law enforcement will be on hand at the games to award medals to the athletes.

The torch will travel from the Statehouse to 10th St. then on Topeka Boulevard south down Highway 75. At BETO Junction, it will be passed Coffey County officers. The exchange should take place at approximately 2 pm Wednesday.

The Law Enforcement Torch Run began with just six runners in Wichita in 1981. It has grown into an international program which raises millions of dollars each year to benefit Special Olympics programs in the United States and abroad.
