Topeka - More than $100,000 in unclaimed property is headed back to its owners.

The State Treasurer's Unclaimed Property division set up in the WIBW studios Tuesday, taking viewer calls through all the newscasts.

From 4 pm to 10:30 pm, the system received more than 21,000 inquiries from either phone calls or by clicking the "Kansas Cash Connection" link on the wibw.com home page. They were able to see if any of the millions of dollars in unclaimed property the state is holding belongs to them.

State Treasurer Dennis McKinney says the state is holding items like closed bank accounts, outdated stock certificates or contents of abandoned safe deposit boxes. There might also be rent or utility deposits or refunds. Businesses are required to turn them over to the state treasurer after a period of time for holding until the owners can be located.

In Tuesday's special event, more than 560 people had potential claims, totaling more than $100,000. The largest single claim was $28,970.

Those who didn't call Tuesday night may reach the Treasurer's Office Unclaimed Property Division at 1-800-432-0386 or clicking the link on the wibw.com home page.
