Kansas families began the task of cleaning up from the flooding sparked by torrential rains over the weekend.

In Maple Hill, several homes reported several feet of water invading their basements. Cleaning companies were out in full force, assisting residents with pumping water out. People were carrying their water-logged possessions to higher ground to dry out.

The National Weather Service issued a river flood warning Sunday night for the Kansas River. The river rose above flood stage to nearly 17 feet Monday morning. It dropped to below-flood levels by early evening.

A flood warning remained in effect for Cross Creek in Rossville Monday night. Fire officials in the town said it hadn't caused major problems, but they were keeping an eye on it.
