TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) _ A special prosecutor has been assigned to handle the case against a Topeka officer accused in a double shooting at a St. Patrick's Day party.
The Topeka Capital-Journal is reporting that Johnson County assistant district attorney Cindi Carle will serve as special counsel for the case against Jason Judd.
Shawnee County Commissioners agreed Monday to the appointment and to provide a special counsel for Johnson County in case one is needed.
Judd is charged with aggravated battery and aggravated assault stemming from the March 18 shootings.
Before the shooting, investigators said Judd and three other off-duty officers had stopped at a party and a bar. They ended the night at the home of one of the officers, where they got into a fight with two brothers at a nearby home.
Investigators said Judd fired his weapon, wounding the brothers.
