WAVERLY, KAN. - What started with saving one horse has turned into a full-time mission for Kristin Chambers. The equine manager has saved almost one hundred horses from abuse, neglect and death since she opened Winding Road Equine Rescue & Retirement four years ago.

This year kicked off to a miraculous start when Chambers stumbled upon Clever Allemont, a former champion racehorse.

The 27-year-old dark-brown mare was about to be sent overseas for slaughter. Chambers asked for donations online and found full support within 30 minutes from a woman in New York who remembered the horse's fame.

Clever Allemont moved to Old Friends Equine, a retirement home for horses in Georgetown, Ky., in early January.

Winding Road is registered as a charity organization with a mission statement "dedicated to working with individuals, groups and organizations, primarily youth, who can benefit emotionally from involvement with horses."

The program is completely funded through volunteer efforts and donations.
