Emporia, Kan.- Opponents of a smoking ban in Emporia are nearing their goal for a petition to present to commissioners next month.

The "Emporians Open for Business Group" is trying to force a public vote on a smoking ban that was approved December 3.

The Emporia Gazette reports the group has received 762 signatures.

They must present the signed petition to the city clerk by February 2.

The smoking ban is set to take effect March 3.
