Layoffs at a major Lawrence employer.

Amarr Garage Doors says it's laying off 16% of its workforce. The company says that's 90-100 of its 600 employees.

Spokesperson Kirsten Krug says the cuts are due to the struggling housing market.

“The decision to eliminate jobs is never taken lightly at Amarr, but the workforce adjustments will allow us to remain competitive and adjust to the current sales level. The business is in good shape and we still have a large and important workforce in Lawrence,” Krug said in a statement.

The Lawrence plant produces more than 90 percent of Amarr’s branded garage doors. Amarr opened its manufacturing facility in Kansas City in 1983 and moved it to Lawrence in 1989.

“No matter how small or large the workforce reduction, it impacts the lives and families of our friends and colleagues,” Krug said. “We are working hard to make the workforce transition as smooth as possible for everyone, and we are turning to each other for support during this challenging period of change.”

About twenty of the jobs are seasonal positions, the rest are in the manufacturing, administration and management divisions.
