USD 501 Receives Charter School Application
School officials report they received an application monday for a charter school that would temporary be housed at the former location of the Family Service & Guidance Center. USD 501 has recieved another application for a charter school, according to school district attorney Joe Zima.
The district has rejected at least three charter school applications since 2000. Previous applicants, belonging to the group Community First, lobbied for the historic Sumner Elementary School as the charter school location.
The new application states that the Sumner school isn't part of the primary plan, but a only a long-term location. Since renovations wouldn't be complete before the 2009-2010 school year, the committee behind the application has toured another building at 2055 SW Clay. This building used to be the location of the Family Service & Guidance Center.
Under portions of the application titled "Primary Plan" and "Secondary Plan", applicants state that they would first like to rent the building on Clay street and then move to the historic Sumner School once renovations there are finished.
The charter school would enroll students in fourth through eighth grade.
USD 501 Officials say they've allowed time for a presentation about the charter school during their meeting on Thursday.

Ok, so open the charter school, the teachers can't make those students learn just like they can't MAKE students learn at any other school. It is time to start holding the students responsible and stop looking to fix the school. 501 will spend their money the way they want no matter what is best. They already pay some administrators a ton for sitting in their office while teachers bust their tails. No wonder good teachers leave.
