Local students are taking part in the American Cancer Society's Great American Smoke Out to learn about why they should avoid using tobacco products.

About 400 eighth grade Washburn Rural Middle school students Thursday heard from an ex-smoker who now has to use a trachea to speak. They learned about the dangers of smoking and reasons why they should avoid tobacco products.

Organizers say approximately one in four teenagers in the United States is a current smoker.
