WICHITA, Kan. (AP) _ A Wichita motorist is jailed in the deaths of a mother and her 4-year-old daughter who were struck while walking to a school.

Formal charges are pending against the 54-year-old man who was driving the SUV that hit the pair Wednesday afternoon. He was booked Thursday on two counts of first-degree murder and other charges, including driving under the influence.

Court records show the man had previous drunken driving convictions. Deputy Police Chief Robert Lee says investigators believe alcohol contributed to Wednesday's deaths.

Thirty-seven-year-old Claudia Mijares and her 4-year-old daughter Gisele were struck outside Gardiner Elementary School. The SUV hit two other vehicles before flipping over in the street.

When you're an alcoholic it doesn't matter what time of day it is. The family of the mother and daughter are in my prayers.
