LAWRENCE, Kansas (AP) Leaders of the state's three engineering schools are asking lawmakers for financial help to stem the severe shortage of engineers in Kansas.

Engineering deans from the University of Kansas, Kansas State University and Wichita State University and industry representatives lobbied lawmakers to increase funding by $15 million per year to boost the number of engineers.

The three engineering schools have proposed a five-year plan to increase the number of undergraduate degrees in engineering programs from 875 per year to 1,365 per year.

The deans told the House-Senate Committee on Economic Development on Friday that the five-year plan would be phased in.

While lawmakers understood the need, they said it's a bad time to ask for more money because of current economic conditions.

Henceforth, this shall be known as the Bail Out Era. Or maybe the Dark Age of Mismanagement. Why would we want to spend more to educate more engineering students in Kansas when most of them will go elsewhere for higher wages? I don't know the answer to that problem but it's the burden Kansas has to bear: When you have a low cost of living, you have low wages. The smartest kids will usually want to go where the wages are better even if the cost of living is higher. You can live somewhere else for 30 years, sell your million dollar home, and retire back home in Kansas with a higher standard of living. I doubt, even with the housing crisis, that will ever change considerably.

Get out the slide rules and figure something out that doesn't involve money. Your University Bigwigs just got a 2 something percent raise.
