LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) - A 46-year-old Topeka motorcyclist who lay injured alongside the Kansas Turnpike is dead after being struck by a second passing vehicle.

Police say Ronald Howard was struck by two vehicles that hydroplaned in heavy rain Tuesday in Leavenworth County. Howard's passenger, Mary Brauner of Topeka, was taken to University of Kansas Hospital in Kansas City, Kan., in critical condition.

A turnpike dispatcher said they and another rider were changing into rain gear under a bridge when a car hydroplaned, striking the motorcycles and the couple. The third motorcyclist escaped injury.

Moments later another passing vehicle hydroplaned and ran over the couple.

A man and wife from New Zealand who had stopped to direct traffic away from the scene were not injured, but their motorcycle was heavily damaged.
