SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (AP) A southwestern Missouri man suspected in at least 20 bank robberies was being held yesterday at the Greene County Jail in Springfield.

Authorities had been searching for Joseph Paul Young, who evaded capture last week when he fled into a wooded area.

The 37-year-old Young, of Rogersville, was taken into custody yesterday morning after a Missouri state trooper saw him driving slowly on Interstate 44 and stopped him.

The trooper ran a check of Young's identification and found out he was wanted by federal authorities.

Young is a suspect in bank robberies credited to the ``Plaid Shirt Robber'' in a half-dozen states including Missouri, Kentucky and West Virginia.
