LEAVENWORTH, Kan. (AP) _ A new exhibit in Leavenworth shows mug shots of former inmates of the city's infamous federal
penitentiary.

The show -- called ``Mugged: A Rogue's Gallery of Leavenworth Penitentiary Mug Shots'' -- opens Saturday at the First City Museum. The collection includes mug shots of heavyweight boxing champion Jack Johnson and William ``Big Bill'' Haywood, a radical union leader.

The photos come from the Federal Bureau of Prisons collection at the Central Region of the National Archives and Records Administration.

Archives spokesman Stephen Spence said recognizability was not the main criteria in choosing which photos to show. Often, he said, the best photos are not the most famous inmates.

The exhibit features separate displays for thieves, violent criminals, women incarcerated at the prison and ``degenerates.''
