Evolution Could Swing with November Election
Three moderates are not seeking reelection to the Kansas State Board of Education. That brings potential for a swing back to a conservative majority, which twice previously approved science standards deemphasizing evolution.

The November election could launc another round in Kansas' fight over evolution.

Five of the 10 seats on the State Board of Education are up for election this year. Of those, three are held by moderates who are not seeking re-election. With a 6-4 advantage now, moderates would lose their majority if two seats shift to the conservative side.

Since 1999, boards with a conservative majority twice adopted science standards de-emphasizing evolution, only to have them reversed when moderates re-took control in elections that followed.
