The Shawnee County District Attorney race is heating up due to mailers sent out to voters. The controversial postcards attack current DA Robert Hecht -- and are leading voters to ask who they come from.

Hecht says the person who sent them out is pretty cowardly.

The postcards depict Hecht, a republican, as a poor prosecutor -- but democratic candidates for his job, Chad Taylor and Jerry Berger, say they are not behind them.

We could not reach Eric Rucker -- the republican running against Hecht. The three candidates we spoke with pointed to a Johnson County group -- the Citizens Coalition for Justice -- as being behind the mailers.

Hecht said he does not know if Rucker is involved, but the group may be backing him. Berger said it is possible Rucker did not request their assistance, but they are sending them anyway.

This kind of mailing campaign -- regardless of who it benefits -- is legal under the state's campaign finance laws.

The candidates say voters rejected negative campaigning in the 2006 attorney general race -- and believe they will do so again.

Rucker will be holding a news conference Monday morning, and 13-news will be there.

mudslinging between candidates should be outlawed because it's a major turn off!

Hecht simply cannot stand up to scrutiny. He has done a poor job as DA and should be voted out of office.

I have not seen any of the adds but I feel Hecht has done a terrible job and does not deserve to be reelected. His partner Bill Bumpkin Bunten is in the same boat

If you are talking about a candidates public record, in or out of office, that is not negative campaiging. If you are talking about his/her personal life that is negative campaiging. It has no place in politics.
