FEMA Gives RECs $52 million
Federal officials have awarded more than $52 million to Kansas rural electric cooperatives and municipal utilities for damage from the December 2007 winter storm.

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) _ Federal officials have awarded more than $52 million to Kansas rural electric cooperatives and municipal utilities for damage from the December 2007 winter storm.

The funds were announced Friday by the Federal Emergency Management Agency and the Kansas Division of Emergency Management.

In all, 20 cooperatives and 24 municipal utilities received assistance to restore damaged facilities.

Funds were part of FEMA's public assistance program. FEMA pays 75 percent of eligible costs for repair or replacement of damaged utilities; the state pays 10 percent, and the local entity, 15 percent.
