OLATHE, Kan. (AP) _ A suburban Kansas City teenager has pleaded no contest to aggravated battery in the death of a schoolmate who collapsed after a fight.
Sixteen-year-year-old Dustin Howard entered the plea Monday morning, the day that his trial in the case was set to begin. The Gardner teen had been expected to stand trial on an involuntary manslaughter charge in Johnson County Juvenile Court.
The judge can accept or reject the plea agreement when Howard is sentenced Thursday.
Under the agreement, Howard won't do any jail time. Instead he'll serve 18 months of supervised probation.
Howard and schoolmate Dakota DeRemus arranged a fight in February. After they fought, the 16-year-old DeRemus collapsed and died. DeRemus had a congenital heart condition.
