A breakdown in the sewage system for Basehor forced state health officials to issue an advisory Monday for Hog Creek in Leavenworth County.

The Kansas Department of Health and Environment and the Kansas
Department of Wildlife and Parks jointly issued a stream advisory. It applies to Hog Creek north of 163rd and Parallel Road to the confluence of Hog Creek with Stranger Creek northwest of the intersection of 182nd and Parallel Road in Leavenworth County.

KDHE says it was notified Monday morning that the force main that
carries sewage from the 163rd St. lift station to the city of Basehor’s
wastewater treatment plant on the west side of town had broken. As a result, sewage was going into Hog Creek. Authorities aren't sure exactly when the main broke, saying it could have been anytime after 5 pm Friday. The 163rd St. lift station receives all flow from Basehor.

Landowners along Hog Creek are advised to avoid contact and to restrict pets and livestock from contact with the creek water until the extent of the impact from the sewage bypass can be determined.

State agency personnel are on-site to evaluate the extent of the bypass and collect samples from Hog Creek. Basehor city crews are also working to repair the break.
