GARDNER, Kan. (AP) _ A 7-year-old boy has died after being struck by an SUV while crossing a street outside a northeast Kansas school.

The accident happened shortly after 3:30 p.m. Thursday outside Madison Elementary School in Gardner. The Johnson County community is located about 30 miles southwest of Kansas City, Mo.

KCTV-TV reports Gardner police identified the boy as Kade M. Meyer, a second-grader at the elementary school and son of a vice principal at Gardner-Edgerton High School.

Police said the boy came out from between two vehicles on the roadside and was crossing the street when he was hit by the SUV. A crosswalk with a guard is located at an intersection about 200 yards from where the child was crossing the road.

Kade was taken to Olathe (oh-LAY'-thuh) Medical Center, where he died.

I am so sad that this happened. The family and the driver are in my prayers. I wish children could understand the danger of crossing between cars. No matter how much we teach them about dangers, sometimes they do it anyway. We don't know all the details yet, and I am sure the driver feels horrible--I just hope they weren't speeding through like I have seen people do. I have had some pretty close calls around kids--they are so unpredictable.
