Topeka (WIBW) - Planning what people will see on the former Topeka State Hospital grounds is shaping up to be a community effort.

The Topeka Public School District brought together leaders from the business, nonprofit and education communities Tuesday. They held a brainstorming session with Bartlett & West Engineers. The firm is designing plans for the 100 acres of land near I-70 and MacVicar that the district recently purchased.

Bartlett & West and USD 501 wanted the group to share its vision for how the property might be used. The southern portion of the grounds the district previously owned houses Hummer Sports Park and Capital City School. The northern portion still to be developed is currently home to a large grassland area, the former cemetery and old buildings, including the Center building which is in the process of being removed.

Neil Dobler of Bartlett & West says the process is unique for his firm. However, he says the property has been such a part of the community's history that whatever it ends up becoming should be something of which the community can continue to feel a part.

Dobler says the firm will take ideas heard Tuesday and develop a master plan proposal within the next couple months. The district has previously said options include new administrative buildings, new programs or even possibly a new school.

Another example of the district putting the cart before the horse...and how much are they paying Bartlett and West? Is that taking money out of our kids classrooms too?
