Topeka is fortunate to have a Mayor with both vision & backbone.

Bill Bunten's vision is evident in his efforts to address significant infrastructure problems.

His backbone shows in telling a majority on the city council he'll use his line-item veto to block spending money on a second new police helicopter.

You'll remember the Mayor originally vetoed the first effort to buy a second helicopter. The council could not override that veto.

Instead, it used a legal trick to try again. One Mayor Bunten could not veto.

Most of us remember that our parents and preacher told us that there's a big difference between doing something that's right and something that's legal.

Being legal doesn't make something right.

That's a message our Mayor learned, but a majority on the council didn't.

I want to know what you think. Send me an email or leave a comment below.

The problem with this city council/manager form of governance is, out side of a taxpayer's vote, we have few options when it comes to stopping these self-serving bureaucrats from taxing/spending as they damn well please. And if you try, you run right into the City Attorney's Office, which is a high powered team of high priced lawyers whose sole purpose is to defend the city hierarchy against the wronged taxpayer. At taxpayer expense. 33 yrs ago, I bought my little house in Topeka because I wanted a place nobody could kick me out of. As of my last tax statement my monthly obligation to this city/county was as much as the principal/interest when I bought it. So, you tell me? What good did it do me to buy this house?

I am all for the police helicopter, but the (gang) went about it the wrong way! Let the people speak up on what they want or don't want. Some on the city council seem to think that we work for them! They vote for what they want and don't care what we say!

The Mayor is 100 percent correct with his vetoing the second helicopter. Topeka is not big enough to need 2 "new" choppers. Besides, the police are only allowed to fly one at a time anyway. Having a "new" chopper parked at Billard is a waste of nearly a million dollars that the city could be using for expansion, lowering taxes or improving roads. At least Bill can veto the funding for this slippery "urgent" agenda that the council has.

It seems that the council has a mental block as to who put them where they are at, and that was to represent us the citizens of Topeka not the Police department. The Police can,t do a very good job on the ground, how are they going to do better from the air. Please keep track of who voted what and when so that you can republish at election time.

Mr. Blackburn's move was legal but ethical? He should lead his five friends on the council in resigning their positions.

It is too bad we have those that want to win at all cost. It makes the little trust we have in government- even less. We see the same thing all the way up to Congress. All five should be ashamed, but I doubt they have an ounce of shame.

I agree that Mayor Bunten is the only bright bulb in the whole chandelier. He even replies to my emails. My own council member (I won't mention his name but his initials are Jeff Preisner) doesn't do that.
