Just another comment about the union attacks of Topeka Fire Chief Howard Giles.

The Union has listed a number of reasons why it says it will settle for nothing less than Chief Giles fired or resigning.

But make no mistake, there is really only one reason the Union is taking this “all or nothing” stance—it cannot abide a Chief selected by any other criteria but seniority. And it wants union-backed seniority to be the ONLY criteria for promotion and advancement in the department. The Union must have a Chief selected from its union ranks if it is to continue to justify the union to its membership—and keep them as members.

It is that Union-only, Union-lead approach that given us the current state of the American auto industry. The argument doesn’t work for cars. It should not work for the Topeka Fire Department.

Regardless of whether you are for or against the current Fire Chief, I believe it shows a glaring lack of journalistic integrity on Jim Ogle's part to broadcast editorials that only represent one side of the debate. WIBW broadcasts on public airwaves, and while I believe there is a place for biased editorials in the news, it should only be done if all sides are given equal airtime to present their perspective. If Jim Ogle is going to continue to broadcast his opinion on the subject, he should invite someone with an opposing opinion to come to the station and give them equal broadcast time to express their point of view, not just relegate them to comments on this website.

With all respect you have no idea what you are talking about. Seniority is but one issue out of a long list of grievances we have against the Chief. We took a vote 15 months ago asking the chief to address these issues and he chose to completely dismiss this, and us. Now 15 months later, when we have had enough, you tell us that we are being out of line. The Chief was given every opportunity to compromise with us but he chose not to act until his job may be on the line. How sad you call yourself a newsman, when you have obviously made up your mind before investigating the facts.

Kent Dederick said yesterday on a radio talk show that the union would support a chief from outside the department that possessed the right experience and credentials. In fact the idea of hiring a leader similar to the current Topeka Police Chief would be acceptable as long as the new chief took the time to earn their respect. So, do not make one-size fits all statements! Further, who is to say that there isn't a qualified person on the department already? I am disappointed because your comments are uneducated and narrow minded as well. Do your homework please! The issues are not about senority only or because he's from out of town. Mr. Giles made those statements, not the union. The union feels it is about lack of trust and the failure to communicate. The list is long and deep as to the examples. They have tried to make it work and after three years don't you think they've given him a chance? How many times do you have to be beaten before you look elsewhere for support?
